funds 11 calls this year on clinical research and research capacity in sub-Saharan Africa. The EDCTP funds clinical research to accelerate the development of new or improved drugs, vaccines, microbicides and diagnostics against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria as well as other poverty-related infectious diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. Application process opens April 11, 2018 – Application deadline May 11, 2018
The African Academy of Sciences (AAS), the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are partnering under the auspices of the Coalition of African Research & Innovation (CARI) to establish a post-doctoral training fellowship program, the African Postdoctoral Training Initiative (APTI). Training will be at a world class institute, the intramural laboratories of NIH.
APTI fellows will train in a global health research area of priority for their home institutions and countries, and AAS, BMGF and NIH, while building bridges and lasting connections between the partner organizations and African scientists and institutions.
Mourning the Loss of “A Life on the Front Lines of AIDS Research”
amfAR, TREAT Asia and IeDEA are deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. David Cooper, a founding member of the TREAT Asia Network and Director of The Kirby Institute at the University of South Wales in Sydney, Australia. Dr. Cooper died March 18.
Dr. Cooper was internationally recognized as a pioneering researcher and clinician. He was among the first to respond to the HIV epidemic in Australia in the 1980s, and he has been central to the regional fight in the Asia-Pacific against HIV. Dr. Sohn leads amfAR’s TREAT Asia (Therapeutics Research, Education, and AIDS Training in Asia) program and chairs the Executive Committee of the NIH-funded IeDEA (International Epidemiology Databases to Evaluate AIDS) global cohort consortium.

New Study: Evaluating Depression and Anxiety in Thai Adolescents with HIV
U.S. studies have estimated that as many as 60% of HIV-infected adolescents suffer from depression, anxiety, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and it is widely thought that these conditions contribute to the high rates of poor adherence and treatment failure seen in this population. As part of TREAT Asia’s initiative to address the mental health concerns of adolescents living with HIV in Asia, a new study funded through the US National Institutes of Health IeDEA collaboration is evaluating the prevalence and clinical course of depression and anxiety in Thai adolescents with HIV.
