astName%22%3A%22Nachega%22%7D%5D%2C%22abstractNote%22%3A%22On%20August%2014%2C%202024%2C%20following%20a%20regional%20declaration%20by%20the%20Africa%20Centres%20for%20Disease%20Control%20and%20Prevention%2C%20the%20World%20Health%20Organization%20declared%20mpox%20a%20Public%20Health%20Emergency%20of%20International%20Concern%2C%20marking%20the%20second%20such%20declaration%20in%20two%20years.%20A%20series%20of%20outbreaks%20involving%20the%20more%20virulent%20clade%20I%20virus%20%28compared%20to%20clade%20II%2C%20which%20caused%20a%20global%20outbreak%20in%202022%29%2C%20has%20now%20spread%20in%2013%20African%20countries%2C%20exposing%20the%20inadequacies%20of%20the%20public%20health%20infrastructure%20in%20these%20settings.%20There%20was%20significant%20investment%20during%20the%202022%20global%20outbreak%2C%20but%20these%20efforts%20failed%20to%20address%20vaccine%20access%20and%20treatment%20in%20the%20Global%20South.%20Regulatory%20delays%2C%20unequal%20access%20to%20vaccines%2C%20and%20a%20lack%20of%20compassionate%20use%20treatments%20for%20severe%20cases%20have%20resulted%20in%20preventable%20cases%20and%20deaths%2C%20especially%20among%20vulnerable%20populations%20such%20as%20pregnant%20women%2C%20children%2C%20and%20the%20immunocompromised.%20The%20current%20outbreak%20also%20underscores%20critical%20knowledge%20gaps%20in%20our%20understanding%20of%20mpox%2C%20including%20its%20transmission%2C%20pathogenesis%2C%20and%20viral%20evolution.%20We%20join%20intensified%20calls%20for%20global%20solidarity%20and%20action%20to%20control%20mpox%2C%20emphasizing%20immediate%20containment%20measures%20and%20long-term%20local%20and%20international%20investment%20in%20African%20public%20health%20systems%2C%20to%20prevent%20future%20epidemics.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%222025-01-08%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22eng%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%2210.4269%5C%2Fajtmh.24-0606%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%221476-1645%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%22GXCKG69T%22%2C%22369YB7BV%22%2C%22ZVWK2Q45%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222025-03-10T15%3A56%3A27Z%22%7D%7D%5D%7D
